GUIDANCE NOTE TO PARENTS / CARERS

Medicines and Medical Support to Pupils

In line with the City Council’s common policy for Southampton schools, it has been considered necessary to adopt a common policy on the administering of medicines and medical support for pupils.

It is recognised that, in order to minimise disruption to pupils’ education and ensure their wellbeing, it is sometimes necessary for medicines to be taken or administered in school. The occasions when this occurs should be kept to an absolute minimum by planning doses to avoid school time, if at all possible. We will, of course, continue to do everything possible to assist pupils with chronic conditions, such as asthma / diabetes, to lead as normal a school life as possible.

Non-prescription medicines must not be brought to school, this includes paracetamol (Calpol), Ibuprofen (Nurofen for Children) and cough sweets, etc. Such medicines will not be administered or provided by school staff.

Southampton City Council’s “Medicines and Medical Support of Pupils in Schools” Policy requires parents / carers to sign an authorisation form, which will allow certain staff to administer prescribed medicines to children. Where children need long-term medical support we also require parents / carers to complete a healthcare plan. If this applies to your child, please check with the school office that this is up to date.
